2 posts todayThere is this idea that in the past mothers got lots of help from female relatives. But in the UK, those who could afford it often hired monthly nurses who came to help for a month after the baby was born.

2 posts todayAnn was in the workhouse and refused the job of a wet nurse i.e. breastfeeding other women's children. She told the magistrate she would rather be in prison than the workhouse as they were treated better in prison.
